Services for Mrs. Clara
Colwell Held Here Monday

Mrs. Clara R. Colwell, 80, died
Friday, Sept. 20, in a Larned,
Kansas hospital, following a long
illness.

She was born in Marion county,
Kansas, to Robert and Margaret
(Brooks) Sinex and came to Smith
county in 1902 as the bride of John
M. Colwell of Bellaire, Kansas.

She pioneered the baby chick
hatching industry in Smith Center
and owned and operated the
Colwell Hatchery until in 1930,
when due to poor health she was
forced to close the hatchery.

She is survived by a son, Clyde
T. Colwell, Bellaire, Kansas, and
a daughter, Dr. Goldia B. Young,
Oklahoma City, Okla; also five
granchildren and ten great-
granchildren, and two sisters,
Mrs. Sadie Ambler and Dr. Lisa
A. Yoder, both of Newton, Kansas.

Services were held Monday, Sept.
23, 1957 in the chapel of the
Simmons-Oliff funeral home, with
the Rev. Harold Lambert of the
Methodist church officiating,
assisted with music by Mrs. Harold
Lambert, soloist.

Burial was in Fairview cemetery.
